Having fun while learning about sustainability!
Sustainability event at Shimane Susanoo Magic’s
first home game of the season

The Shimane Susanoo Magic, a team in Japan’s B.League professional basketball league, joined the Bandai Namco Group in 2019. In addition to doing well on the court, the team is also involved in activities that help to energize the local community.
Starting in fiscal 2023, we have committed to holding sustainability events every season under the slogan, ”Having fun while learning about sustainability.” At the team’s first home game of the season, the CO2 emitted at the venue was offset using blue carbon, a CO2 absorption effect obtained through the Bandai Namco Group’s cooperation in protecting the marine environment in Shimane Prefecture. We also held a small event where fans could learn about sustainability in a fun way.
The Group will continue working together with fans to make a sustainable society a reality.

Uniform upcycling experience
We held a hands-on session for the first 150 fans to make their own original key chains using materials from the uniforms of Shimane Susanoo Magic players that could no longer be used.

Quiz-based learning with a browser game
We promoted the augmented reality quiz game called PAC-MAN―sustainable quiz―, which allows participants to learn about the global environment in a fun way, at the venue. Many fans enjoyed playing it.

Recycling with Operation Gundam R
We introduced our plastic recycling initiatives during a Gunpla model making class. Participants were asked to actually place their runners in the collection box, with the first 500 receiving recycled ECOPLA, serving as an opportunity to raise awareness about recycling.

Collected used clothing at home games
As part of our used closing collection operation announced on the team’s official social media accounts, we set up a collection box at the arena for one home game.

Utilized blue carbon to reduce CO2 footprints of Shimane Susanoo Magic games
Blue carbon represents an approach to increase the amount of CO2 absorbed in the world by preserving algae and mangroves that grow in and around the ocean. In Japan, the J-Blue Credit system allows companies to use a portion of the CO2 emissions absorbed as a result of their efforts to support marine ecosystem conservation activities. We used the J-Blue Credit system to offset the CO2 emissions from the venue during one of the Shimane Susanoo Magic’s home games.

Panel display highlighting our initiatives
We set up a panel display introducing the Bandai Namco Group’s sustainability initiatives.

Menu items made from local foods
With the aim of promoting regional development and local production for local consumption, we arranged for a food truck offering menu items made from locally grown ingredients to operate outside the arena.
Sustainability initiatives with the Shimane Susanoo Magic
In addition to these events, we are actively engaged in social contribution activities through sports.

Supporting children with outreach classes
Shimane Susanoo Magic players visit kindergartens, nursery schools, and elementary schools in Shimane Prefecture to lead Dream Classes where they talk with children about their dreams for the future.

Who are the Shimane Susanoo Magic?
The Shimane Susanoo Magic plays in the B.League, Japan’s professional basketball league. Their home court is the Matsue City General Gymnasium (Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture). The team’s name is derived from a legendary kami (deity) in Japanese mythology known as Susanoo no Mikoto. This particular kami, who is closely related to the Izumo region of Shimane Prefecture, is believed to have founded the nation of Japan in ancient times. The word magic is used to symbolize his mysterious power.
